I’ve loved facilitating discussions ever since I was first asked to manage a session in the auspicious lecture theatre at the Royal Institution. It was a final panel following a series on women and science, early in my career. Maybe it’s the power of the microphone!
I love helping a panel of articulate and experienced people tell a collective story or develop a strategy. Supporting a group of technical/diversity experts or a senior deep tech team gives me a great buzz – as does finding action-oriented outcomes.
Different audiences offer different challenges, and this is what keeps me going. I love reworking and improving the programmes and stories I can tell, embracing my CliftonStrengths of Strategic, Ideation, Activator and Maximizer.
In 2008 I co-created EDSNAP, – the Equality and Diversity Snapshot Audit Tool. This helps professional societies explore diversity and inclusion. Since then I’ve participated in advisory / working groups for a wide range of organisations including: CIC, IoP, RSC, Construction Skills and CITB. In addition, I’ve served as an advisor to the NSF ACCESS+ and REVIIS programmes.
Engineering is beginning to embrace diversity and inclusion, but there’s still an element of resistance and a sense of feeling criticised. Opening the conversation to explore excellence and innovation was the topic of my Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professorship with the Open University. In 2023 I took up a role of Visiting Professor at TEDI London.
As an accredited CliftonStrengths coach and facilitator, the power of this tool for facilitating discussions within teams never ceases to amaze me. Whether introducing people to strengths or working with a high performing team, someone always learns something. Sessions use complementary tools and frameworks to help individuals and teams maximise their impact.
